Data center infrastructures are common in the modern digital era, where routine computing processes are entrusted to machines. Thus, big or small network systems are arranged to ensure effective information processing and reliable data storage.

IT telecommunication systems are sets of hardware pieces taken together to form a single performing unit. Such systems are comprised of servers, switches, routers, cables, etc. Here, a PC stands as a managing device, through which system administrators configure the system, detect errors, and adjust indicators. This is why it’s impossible to handle network systems without a computer.

PC installation in a desktop server rack comes as a great option to simplify maintenance, since the staff can keep all the needed devices at a site without the need to carry the computer each time they service the system. Besides, this solution allows for organizing the available rack space ergonomically. Although there are several rack-mounting options, the use of pull-out shelves often comes as the most effective one. In the article, we’re going to delve into the issue and discuss how to rack mount a PC easily and properly.

Why Do I Need to Rack Mount Your Desktop PC?

Although the computer is not an obligatory component of network systems (to be mounted on site), it’s highly recommended to install the device in server racks due to the following reasons:

  1. Ensuring effective cable organization. All the needed technological slots are designed in rack constructions. Thus, enclosures have specialized holes for routing cords and connecting PCs to power units. The use of accessories for cable management allows for achieving better ergonomics and using space effectively. You can read more about server rack cable management in the article.
  2. Enhancing airflow. Constant air circulation for effective ventilation is an obligatory condition for setting up a network system. To ensure it, special server rack cooling systems are implemented to ensure effective heat removal, which means that PCs won’t overheat, while an optimal operating environment is maintained inside enclosures.
  3. Minimizing dust build-up. Ventilated constructions are used to prevent extra dust from penetrating enclosures. Dust accumulation on functioning equipment can lead to worse cooling and overheating, so placing devices in enclosed cabinets is a good way out.
  4. Guaranteeing hardware protection. Enclosed cabinets are locked and provide access to authorized staff only. They guarantee high and reliable protection of the accommodated devices from damage and theft.

The Size of Server Rack Required for Accommodating

Before you learn how to rack mount a PC, it’s necessary to prepare by studying equipment dimensions. Thus, the first preparatory step is to check furniture and hardware compatibility in terms of size. Check the size of your PC and the rack. At this stage, note that the rack dimensions are measured in U (units). If you want to learn more information about standard server rack dimensions, read the article.

As for more precise dimensions, note that 3U is the minimum rack unit for PC installation. If you have a smaller rack model, the computer won’t fit the enclosure due to its size. If you take the 3U cabinet, the PC is positioned vertically. 6U rack is often considered as the most suitable model for computer mounting.

Possible Options for Rack Mounting the Computer

There are 2 common options for mounting a PC in a rack:

  1. Horizontal. This solution is common and more popular since it allows for saving space and accommodating devices ergonomically. Most PC models perfectly fit 19-inch racks, meaning that their widths are no more than 17.7 inches. Most of Sysracks’ models are made in such design.
  2. Vertical. This option is suitable for computers, the width of which exceeds 17.7 inches. In this case, they are reliably fastened with special dowels. This installation layout allows for mounting two devices nearby. Check out our vertical computer rack.

A suitable mounting configuration is chosen, based on the number of devices, the availability of free space, and the rack size.

What May be Needed During Installation?

When considering the question of how to rack mount a PC, note that you will need additional accessories to fasten devices and prevent damage. When installing the computer, you won’t be able to cope with the task without the following accessories:

  1. Cable managers. These allow for keeping wires neat and organized, which prevents tangling.
  2. Keyboard shelves. These flat horizontal surfaces give extra stability when mounting PCs. They are attached to the mounting rails, ensuring reliable fixation of the equipment.

How to Rack Mount a PC?

Finally, here is a step-by-step guide on how to install the computer into the rack:

  1. Install a shelf. Use screws and dowels from an assembly kit to attach the shelf to the mounting rails or chassis.
  2. Fix brackets to prevent slippage and falling.
  3. Accommodate the PC vertically or horizontally.
  4. Wire cables, using special accessories.
  5. Connect the computer to the power unit.

The PC is widely used by sysadmins to configure the system and detect malfunctions or errors. Thus, its presence in the server cabinet simplifies maintenance regularly done by the staff. So, the integration of the computer into the server cabinet layout eliminates the need to carry the computer each time a technician visits it.

As you see, it’s not difficult to install the computer into the rack. This straightforward process not only optimizes space and ensures efficient cable management, but also enhances overall system performance by improving cooling and reducing dust accumulation. If you have any questions or need further assistance, don’t hesitate to contact our managers. We’re here to help ensure that your setup is as efficient and secure as possible. Remember, a well-organized server environment is key to reliable and effective IT operations.
